Researchers have found
some good news and some bad news in regards to stepfamilies. The bad
news is that the first three years can be so hard that the majority of
couples end up divorcing. The good news is that for those who do make
it to year five the families are generally stronger than traditional
families. This probably has a lot to do with how much more stepfamilies
have gone through together in those first five years.
Our goal is to help you
become part of the good news stepfamily category. The most important
step to achieve this goal is for you to form and sustain a healthy
marriage.
If the foundation of a
bridge is weak, then it will crumble under the stress of the loads that
are put upon it. The same is true in stepfamilies. The foundation of a
strong stepfamily is a strong marriage. In first time marriages the
loads that are put on them are usually initially light and more time is
given for the couple to form a solid marital foundation. This is
generally not the case with stepfamilies. The loads are immediately
heavy and if the marital relationship isn't solid then the whole
structure crumbles quickly.
So, how do you form the
type of marital foundation that will be able to withstand the pressures
associated with stepfamilies? The key is to gain and implement the
skills and knowledge that will allow you to quickly form and, most
importantly, maintain a healthy marriage.
